The Magical Tea Party House

As a little girl, my twin sister and I loved to play tea party with our dolls. In our narrow backyard in Venezuela, there were several clumps of incredibly special banana plants. As banana plants yield fruit and die, new shoots grow next to the old ones. The way that banana plants propagate created a not-so-perfect circle in our backyard. With our tummy sucked-in, we would squeeze sideways in between the banana trunks to find ourselves inside a magical nature house. The dead banana shoots were cut short but left there to feed the new ones. These stumps were the perfect stools for our dollies and teddy-bears. As you may imagine, this was one of my favorite secret places growing up. And the perfect setting for our tea parties.

The March Hare Ornament Design Process

There is no surprise that the March Hare is one of my favorite characters from Alice in Wonderland. This ornament was the first one I created in this collection. I spent endless hours scrutinizing the original book etchings of this enchanting character. I decided to dress the March Hare with vibrant color trousers, vest, bowtie and a long jacket with a flower on the lapel. Finding the teapots and teacups for these ornaments was a challenge. But, in the end, the tawny March Hare came to life with whimsical long whiskers and a teacup. Finally, I gave him an extra-long pair of incisors to capture the playfulness of his personality.
