The White Rabbit Ornament Design Process
In Lewis Carroll Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland book (Carroll, Lewis, and John Tenniel. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Other Stories. , 2013. Print.), there are several illustrations that depict the White Rabbit. However, there is one that has always caught my attention. This most memorable illustration captures the moment when the White Rabbit is at the trial of the Knave of Hearts, when the White Rabbit is about to read the accusation. Poor Knave of Hearts was accused of stealing the tarts the Queen of Hearts had made on that summer day. I paid awfully close attention to replicate the details of this wonderful etching as I was designing this character. In this illustration, the White Rabbit is carrying a pocket-watch, a trumpet and a scroll.
When my son graduated from high school, we celebrated the big milestone with an open house. The food table had graduation confetti sprinkled throughout. I am known for saving anything that I might be able to bring to life in the future. So, all the confetti ended up in a zip-lock bag. As you can imagine, a few years later I used this same confetto as the White Rabbit’s scroll.
For the trumpet, I used an old Christmas Tree garland that had an assortment of musical instruments dangling from it. Finally, to make the pocket-watch, I used the faces of old wrist watches I had found at a garage sale. Actually, it was these watches that inspired me to create the Alice in Wonderland collection. And so, the White Rabbit came to life by piecing together all these found, new and saved treasures.
