Acorn Fairy House Ornament Design Process
Once Upon a Spring Day Afternoon
As my children were growing up, we often went on bike rides from our house in Clintonville to Antrim Lake park. The bike path would take us through thick wooded areas along the Olentangy river. So, we would fill our backpacks with hard boiled eggs, fruit, cookies and juices as we prepared for the ride. We would pedal through the curvy bike path until the little legs were tired. Then we would stop to watch the water flow. And rest the little legs enough to pedal once more. After many curves and turns, we would reach the lake. In the end, sitting by the lake eating our picnic was the perfect reward after a long bike ride.
The Wonderful Finding
One day, as we were riding through the park, we found a big piece of bark that had fallen by the bike path. It reminded me of the fairy houses I used to build and draw as a little girl. And I realized that I had yet to show my children how to build fairy houses! I placed the piece of bark in my bike’s basket and we headed home.
The Construction of the Fairy House
That afternoon, we built a fairy village in the flowerbed by the back patio and we used bark as the main construction material. We also used sticks, leaves, pinecones, acorns and twine, all glued together with a glue gun.
My daughter made a table and chairs, and beds for the fairies, while my son built a firepit and a catapult for protection from evil beings. Also, they collected leaves and berries for food. And they made sure there were plenty of leaves for blankets, because there was still a chill in the air as Spring had just arrived.
Dedication of the Acorn Fairy House Ornament
The next morning, as my children were checking the fairy house for signs of inhabitants, they noticed golden pollen dust all over the fairy village. What better proof than authentic pixie dust to erase any doubts we might all have had about the existence of fairies!
So, I dedicate this teeny tiny Acorn Fairy House ornament to my children, whose tiny hands learned how to build fairy houses once upon a Spring afternoon.

Perfect little ‘woodland’ themed decoration on my tree. I kept it out even after I put my Christmas tree away. Love it!
