The Wizard Merlin Ornament
s I was considering different subjects that might capture the imaginations of little boys, I decided to research iconic medieval characters. In doing my research, I discovered the character richness of the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. An era where queens, princesses, kings, wizards and knights ruled the world was the perfect theme for my figurines. So, I chose to embark on a special journey to the medieval ages. There is so much research into the design of these ornaments! Because of this, I incorporated lots of details that make these ornaments especially memorable. And that is how this Wizard Merlin ornament came about. Pair this ornament with others in this collection, like the King Arthur ornament, or even Excalibur!
Wizard Merlin Ornament Design Process
Who is the Wizard Merlin?
Merlin the enchanter, is King Arthur’s teacher and spiritual guide. Sir Hector raises Arthur as a squire. Although, it was Merlin who taught him the arts of astronomy, magic and alchemy. As Arthur polished his fencing and battle skills, Merlin guided Arthur in matters of the spirit.
The Design
In his book The Story of King Arthur and His Knights (Pyle, Howard. The Story of King Arthur and His Knights. , 2016. Print.) Pyle depicts Merlin with aged features and a long beard. Additionally, Pyle draws Merlin wearing long robes, and a tall hat. So, I clad Merlin in a dark blue and purple robe. Next, I gave him a brown cloak made from a brown cotton material with an interesting print pattern. After that, I added a tall wizard’s hat. And I embroidered it with suns, moons, and stars framing his aged face. Next, I used a white silk fringe to make his beard. Finally, a wizard cannot be complete without a proper staff and messenger owl. Therefore, I used small branches for his staff. And owl-shaped buttons for his familial owl, completing his mystical character.
