Peter Pan Ornament
recall the countless hours my siblings, cousins, and I spent playing “Follow the Leader” when my older sister or older brother assumed the role of Peter Pan and we mindlessly followed them while a trail of giggles and laughs filled the air. We would climb up and down the stairs making sure no adults were around. We had clubhouses on trees like Peter Pan’s, and we reenacted scenes of the book, or made up stories of our own. Needless to say, Peter Pan was a magnificent character that I was inspired to immortalize in this figurine collection.
Peter Pan Ornament Design Process
As I envisioned how to bring Peter Pan, or the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up, to life embodied in this figurine, my most important challenge was to portray him as a naughty and impish child full of himself. What better way to achieve his personality than by giving him a snarky and mischievous smile?
After capturing his personality, I needed to select those elements that would make the Peter Pan ornament unmistakable. The figurine is clad in “skeleton leaves” in all shades of green. Wendy’s kiss, the thimble, dangles from his neck as a symbol of their timeless friendship. Hanging from his leather sash, is a bag of fairy dust which he blows on the Darling children as he teaches them how to fly. I gave Peter Pan a leather hat topped with a red feather as a symbol of being the leader of the Lost Boys. His feet are fitted with bear skin leather booties, representing his friendship with the Redskins.
To complete the character, I added a sword, the very same sword he seized when facing Captain James Hook in their final fight. And we cannot forget Tinker Bell who flutters protectively above his shoulder.
