Buckeye Fan Snowman

became a fan of the OSU Buckeyes, when I learned to appreciate the sport of American football. Since I grew up in Venezuela, American football was foreign to me. It was not until my daughter’s high school years, when I realized the complexity and strategy of this sport. As I chaperoned the Friday’s high school games, I became hooked. So, I wanted to create a Christmas Tree ornament that would honor this wonderful American sport. Thus, I added the Buckeye Fan Snowman ornament to the Santa Claus Ornaments Collection to celebrate American football.

Mini Buckeyes

You may know by now, that one of my favorite Fall pastimes is collecting buckeyes that have fallen on the ground. I spent my Saturdays walking through the park filling my backpack with these gorgeous brown gems. Sometimes, buckeye pods contain more than one buckeye. Usually, the twin buckeyes are large. Occasionally, you may find a large one, and a few teeny-tiny ones inside the same pod. Those are exceedingly rare, and my favorite ones! One autumn, I found quite a few of these miniature buckeyes. And so, I set them aside for a special ornament. When I decided to create the Buckeye Fan Ornament, I remembered these buckeyes I had gathered previously and knew exactly how I was going to used them.

The Design of the Buckeye Fan Snowman

Like the North Pole Snowman ornament, I gave the Buckeye Fan Snowman a traditional top hat. But, instead of just plain berries, I decorated it with real buckeyes mixed with the berries. Finally, to complete the hat, I added a sash made from ribbon. Obviously, the color palette for this ornament includes scarlet, grey, white, and black. Next, I embroidered the snowman’s face with black glass beads to resemble coal. And so, I gave him a crooked smile as he is anticipating another victory over that team up north. For the nose, I molded a carrot with orange colored bake-clay. I also added a long scarlet and grey scarf around his neck that flows with the wind. Then, I gave him a scarlet and grey vest too. Finally, I used twigs to make his arms.

The Final Touch

I needed to give the Buckeye Fan Snowman a football. So, I found football shaped buttons that were the perfect size for the football. Thus, the snowman is holding the football ready to throw a Hail Mary pass! This Buckeye Fan Snowman ornament has become a favorite of football aficionados of all ages.
