Inspiration
arwhals, or the Unicorns of the Sea, are real whales that roam the cold waters of the north. The males grow a long tooth that is known as their tusk. Even though Narwhals are real whales, medieval legends make references to their mystical powers. Mermaids, on the other hand, are fantasy creatures that may be found in many fairy tales. As I was thinking of new characters to add to the Stick Puppet collection, I thought of a new make-believe character of my own! I gave a mermaid the tusk of a Narwhal, and so, the Narwhal Mermaid was born.
Narwhal Mermaid Stick Puppet Ornament Design Process
Given that the Stick Puppet collection already has The Little Mermaid, this new mermaid had to be completely different. So, in the spirit of unicorns, I chose pastel colors for this Unicorn Mermaid. I selected shiny and sparkly pink, baby blue, and white materials to make their fins. I added ribbons that resemble streams of water dangling from their waists, and included glass beads, pearls, and shells threaded with a silver cord. I decorated their pastel yarn long hair with a crown of pearls. And I adorned their forehead with powdered glitter. To complete the Narwhal Mermaid ornament, I added a unicorn tusk on their forehead. This character is one of my favorite ones, as it is the fruit of my own imagination.
