Inspiration
ike most young children, I love fantasy and fairy tales. There is something about this genre that fuels my imagination. My goal is to keep adding iconic characters found in these enchanting tales to this collection. From the Grimm Brothers to Charles Perrault, I will continue adding their delightful characters to this collection. I always have their fairy tales‘ characters on the back of my mind, just waiting for the right material or object to spark my creativity. One day, I came across the perfect material to create The Princess and the Frog Stick Puppet ornament.

A Wonderful Find
A few years ago, I found a wonderful treasure when I was hopping from garage sale to garage sale. I found some canning jars filled with buttons: buttons of all sorts of colors, shapes, and materials. After haggling for a price, I returned home with my precious cargo. I spilled all over the floor and started sorting through the buttons, making piles of metals, reds, blacks, and mother of pearls. There were also piles of hearts, flowers, and animal shapes! Dogs, kittens, owls, and frogs made up that last pile.
Uhm, frogs, what an interesting finding, I thought. Instantly, what first came to mind, was The Frog Prince fairy tale. This was the first fairy tale of many that the Grimm Brothers included in their book Children’s and Household Tales (Grimm, Jacob, George Barclay, David Bogue, Wilhelm Grimm, Anne Renier, Fernand G. Renier, and Edward H. Wehnert. Household Stories. London Fleet Street: David Bogue, 1857. Print.). So, there was no doubt that I had to make The Princess and the Frog the next addition to the Stick Puppets Ornaments Collection.
The Design
My idea was to create a beautiful princess and attach the frog shaped buttons to her dress. So, to make the Princess’s dress, I used embroidered ribbons with rich tones and golden accents. Then, I used embroidery thread for her hair with long silky ponytails on either side of her face. I added a small tiara that decorates her head. Finally, right at the edge of her dress, I placed the enchanted prince. In fact, The Prince Frog is awaiting to be noticed, wistfully hoping to turn back into a gentle prince.
Like all the other members in the Stick Puppets Collection, the Princess and the Frog sits on a long stick. This way, a child’s small hands can hold the stick without harming the ornament.
