Inspiration
created the Snow Queen stick puppet ornament in response to my youngest clients. Since Disney launched their first Frozen movie, I have received innumerable inquiries about its protagonist, Elsa. Since the movie Frozen is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s famous fairy tale “The Snow Queen,” I used The Snow Queen fairy tale as my inspiration for the Snow Queen Stick puppet ornament. This Snow Queen stick puppet ornament is my own interpretation of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale.
Snow Queen Stick Puppet Ornament Design Process
One of the first things I do when creating an ornament, is to select the color palette I will use. My original idea was to have white be the only color but to have multiple material textures. Given that I mostly use material remnants, I sometimes must select multiple color palettes because I do not have enough material of a specific color. In this case, I did not have enough white felt to make the cape for all the ornaments I wanted to make. So, I decided to introduce a secondary color. Hence, some of the capes are white, others are light turquoise, and some are periwinkle. I designed the cape of the Snow Queen very long, and with a large regal collar.
For hair, I chose the lightest yellow yarn I had. I did not want to use white as I was afraid it might give the Snow Queen an elderly look. For a moment, I considered using a light blue yarn, but I quickly realized that it would clash with the colors of the cape. I tied her hair in two pigtails that flow down to the floor on either side of her face. I also gave her a silver crown with jewels that match the color of her cape.
I used a shiny white taffeta for her dress. I prepared the fabric by affixing a stiff interface to the back of the taffeta. Then, I cut “ice shards” from the fabric. Each skirt is made of eight different ice shards or ice petals that together resemble a snowflake. To make the skirt puffy, I added plenty of tulle underneath. I added ribbons and big snowflake sequins and buttons to decorate the dress.
In Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, an evil goblin creates an enchanted mirror that distorted everything that was reflected on it. One day, the mirror broke into millions of tiny pieces. The pieces spread throughout the world. Some of the pieces landed in people’s hearts, making them cold. And some other pieces landed in people’s eyes, making them see beauty as ugliness, and ugly things even uglier. So, to complete the character of the Snow Queen, I added a piece of an old computer DVD. This shard represents one of the millions of the enchanted mirror’s shards.
