St. Patrick’s Day Shamrock
have always had a very vivid imagination. As kids, my twin sister Claudia and I, would imagine the most fantastic worlds of make-believe. Coloring was the favorite past-time of my childhood. My colored-pencil drawings were filled with fantastic creatures. And leprechauns with their rainbows, pots of gold, and shamrocks were frequent visitors of the magical realms I invented on the sheets of coloring paper.
As an adult, I instilled the love for the magical world of fantasy to my children. So, the leprechaun always came to our house the morning of St. Patrick’s Day and would leave a trail of shamrocks behind him. My daughter Laura Elena would wake early in the morning to find her bedroom floor sprinkled with green shamrock confetti. She would wake up her brother Michael, and together they would scour the house for green shamrocks. Laura would collect them in a Ziploc bag and take them to school as evidence of the magical visit of the Leprechaun.
So, I created this unique St. Patrick’s Day shamrock ornament to honor those fantastic creatures I weaved through my childhood colored-pencil drawings, and to those morning hours at home when my children were immersed in the magical world of the St. Patrick’s Day Leprechaun.
St. Patrick’s Day Shamrock Ornament Design Process
Believe it or not, this St. Patrick’s Day Shamrock ornament is made from cardboard tubes of the same diameter. The tubes are toilet paper rolls. I took the cardboard tubes and flattened them by passing them through a pasta making machine. Once flattened, I cut the tubes in thin strips, all the same width. I shaped the cardboard circles into a heart shape by stitching it with a very thin thread. Then, I glued them together to make the shape of the shamrock.
Once the shamrock was assembled, I dipped it in green paint. After the shamrock had dried, I dipped it in polyacrylic gloss and immediately into a tub of green glitter and hung it to dry. Finally, I used green string to make a hoop to hang it from.
