Autumn Fairy Ornament Design Process
A World of Two Seasons
Growing up in Venezuela, I never had the opportunity to experience the four seasons. As a matter of fact, a dry and a rainy season was all there was to experience. Nonetheless, our two seasons had their own charms. That being the case, I especially liked the rainy season.
Thus, I loved when torrential rains would fall from the sky like curtains of water. And I loved the way the air would smell wet. Furthermore, I enjoyed how the tree frogs would croak. And how their sounds would mix with the sound of the raindrops. Finally, I relished how the sounds stitched together beautiful melodies that would lull you asleep. But I always wondered how it would feel to experience the dropping of the leaves and the melting of snowflakes on your tongue? I would wonder how it felt seeing the trees waking up after the long winter? Or the crocuses peeking through the still white-covered frozen ground?
A World of Four Seasons
Coincidentally, without planning it, I ended up living in the United States. I arrived in January, in the middle of winter. And without much warning, I experienced the chilling of my bones and the beauty of the snow. Afterwards, I saw the blooming of the first bulbs, and the ice crusting over tree branches. When summer arrived, I enjoyed tending a vegetable garden and the flickering of lighting bugs. I looked forward to the fall harvest and the changing color of the leaves. And finally, I again experienced the freezing air, and the appreciation of a warm fireplace.
The Creation of the Autumn Fairy Ornament
I came to understand what it meant to have the world change around you as the seasons rolled by. As the seasons churned, I bounced from realm to realm until I was back where I had started. So, I created the Autumn Fairy to represent the Fall realm. I designed her with the shades of yellows, reds, and oranges of the changing leaves. And I added touches of the whites and browns of the bare branches. Finally, I gave her an acorn hat representing the nuts and seeds available for the birds and squirrels to eat.
