Spring Fairy Ornament Design Process
A World of Two Seasons
Growing up in Venezuela, I never had the opportunity to experience four seasons. We only knew of a dry and a rainy season. Nonetheless, our two seasons had their own charms. I especially liked the rainy season.
I loved when torrential rains would fall from the sky like curtains of water. And I loved the way the air would smell wet. I enjoyed how the tree frogs would croak, and how their sounds would mix with the sound of the raindrops. Finally, I relished how the sounds stitched together beautiful melodies that would lull you asleep. But I always wondered how it would feel to experience the dropping of the leaves. And snowflakes dissolving on your tongue. Even more, I would wonder how it felt seeing the trees waking up after the long winter. And the crocuses peeking through the still white-covered frozen ground.
A World of Four Seasons
Without really intending to, I ended up living in the United States. I arrived in January, in the middle of winter. And without much warning, I experienced both the chilling of my bones and the beauty of the snow. Afterwards, I saw the blooming of the first bulbs, and the ice crusting over tree branches. And soon I enjoyed a vegetable garden, and the flickering of lighting bugs. Soon I enjoyed the fall harvest and the changing colors of the leaves. And once again, I experienced the cooling of the air, and the warmth by a fireplace.
The Creation of the Spring Fairy Ornament
Finally, I understood what it meant having the world change around you as the seasons rolled by. As the seasons churned, I bounced from realm to realm until I was back where I had started. I created the Spring Fairy to represent the Spring realm. I designed her in shades of pinks and fuchsias of the blooming flowers. And I added the greens and chartreuses of the tender leaves. Lastly, I incorporated in the design the crystals and glittery melting ice.
