Inspiration
s I fed my insatiable desire to learn all there is to know about gnomes, I came across the intriguing Woodland Gnomes. My newly acquired knowledge is the inspiration for this Girl Woodland Gnome figurine. Also known as Forest Gnomes, these delightful collectibles embody the mystical and elusive nature of these fantastic beings. Despite popular opinion, gnomes are very social. So this gnome has a companion, the Woodland Gnome Boy. I suggest that you pair them together for the perfect gift to the fantasy lovers in your life!
The Research
During my teenage years, my older sister, gave me the most wonderful book about gnomes (Huygen, Wil, and Rien Poortvliet. Gnomes: Text by Wil Huygen. London: Pan Books, 1977. Print.). As you may imagine, the book was full of marvelous illustrations and specific details about the life of gnomes. Not surprisingly, this book still resides in a special place on my bookshelves.
Woodland Gnome girls are usually seen in pairs. Just like the boys, the girl gnomes attract butterflies as well. Gnome folk tales tell us about a magic gemstone brooch that gnome girls wear usually at the waist. The tales go on to say that this gemstone has freezing powers. It can freeze any insect in an instant with just a thought. Therefore, Woodland Gnome girls are responsible for hunting for bugs and worms, or grasshoppers or any other delicacy that they might fancy.
Woodland Gnome Girl Ornament Design Process
Legend has it that female Woodland Gnomes also wear tall pointy hats that they wear over a scarf. So, I designed her with a hat made from a fern green colored felt. As the scarf, I used old, embroidered hankies which I tied around her neck. Similarly, to the gnome boys’ beards, the gnome girls are known to have long fuzzy hair. I gave her long hair made from raw wool that drapes down her back, almost touching the ground.
Since gnome girls are as friendly as the gnome boys, I painted her face with a round pudgy nose that gives her a pleasant appearance. Next, I made her skirt out of red cotton fabric, and trimmed it with a flowery embroidered trim. Finally, for the body, I used old wooden thread spools that a friend gave to me. The wooden spools had once belonged to her late mother in-law, so that makes these ornaments extra magical.
