King Arthur Ornament
s I was considering different subjects that would capture the interest of young boys, I decided to research iconic medieval characters. That is when I discovered the rich characters of the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. An era where queens, princesses, kings, princes, and knights ruled the world was the perfect theme for my figurines. So, I chose to embark on a special journey to the medieval ages. This is how the King Arthur ornament came about. Much research went into the design of these ornaments and I incorporated lots of details that make these ornaments extraordinarily unique and memorable. Likewise, other characters such as Lady Guinevere, Merlin, or The Lady of the Lake exhibit exquisite details true to the original stories.
King Arthur Ornament Design Process
I dressed King Arthur in royal vestments suited for the British King he was, around the late 5th century. As part of his medieval clothing, I gave him a velvet cape. To represent his king status, I added a rich medallion, and a scepter. And, of course, a crown. And just like the Knights of the Round Table, I wanted to show him as the warrior he was. So he is also wearing chest armor with a sword hanging from his leather belt. Clad in all his armor, he is ready to fight against the Saxon invasion.
A New Technique
To make my ornaments last for many generations, I typically use a fabric stiffener to harden their outfits. But, since I had chosen to use velvet cloth to emphasize his regalness, my normal technique was not going to work because the fabric stiffener would ruin the satin smoothness of the fabric. I had to come up with a new process that would allow the hardening of the material without compromising the softness of the velvet. My idea was to line the cape with cotton and apply the stiffener to the lining only and then let it dry. This allowed me to shape the cape as I wanted, and at the same time maintain the suppleness of the velvet.
As my ornaments become more elaborate and detailed, their assembly process becomes more complicated as well. Besides the creative process of bringing characters to life, designing their assembly process is part of the challenge, and satisfaction!
