Sir Lancelot of the Lake Ornament
s I was considering different subjects that would capture the interests of little boys, I decided to research iconic medieval characters. That is when I discovered the rich characters of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Certainly, these characters would, for sure, appeal to boys, and girls too. Indeed, an era where queens, kings, wizards, enchantresses, and knights ruled the world was the perfect theme for my ornaments. So, I chose to embark on a special journey to the medieval ages. Much research went into the design of these ornaments and I incorporated lots of details that make these figurines especially memorable. Pair this ornament with others in this collection like the Knight of The Round Table ornament, or even Excalibur!
Sir Lancelot Ornament Design Process
Who is Sir Lancelot?
The Lady of The Lake raised Sir Lancelot of the Lake, or Sir Launcelot the Noble Knight, from infancy. When Lancelot was eighteen years old, she introduced him to King Arthur. At that time, Lancelot joined King Arthur’s Knights of the Round Table. The story goes that the Lady of the Lake, at this very moment, gifted Lancelot a special battle outfit. She gave him a white suit of armor with silver and gold adornments. She also provided him with a silver shield and a silver helmet, as well as a silver and gold sword in a white sheath to complete his suit of armor.
The Design
I clothed Sir Lancelot of the Lake in a white and silver armor with gold accents. I sourced the metal mesh to make his hauberk from an old evening purse. I added a golden lady on top of his white and silver helmet, representing the Lady of the Lake, just like the illustrations in Howards Pyle’s book (Pyle, Howard. The Story of King Arthur and His Knights. , 2016. Print.). For this adornment, I used some plastic mini mermaids that a friend had found at a thrift store.
The legend says that Sir Lancelot was born with a star-shaped gold birthmark upon his shoulder. Also, we know that the Lady of the Lake gave him an amethyst ring to protect him from sorcery on the battle ground. So I placed a star-shaped medallion with an amethyst around his neck. And finally, I gave him jet-black hair that, against the fairness of his skin, gives him that ethereal aura, unmistakably placing Lancelot as one of those living among the fae.
