Kitty Boy Ornament Design Process
As I was thinking how to design the Boy Kitty figurine, I remembered a bunch of old wooden thread spools I had received from a friend a few years ago. These spools had belonged to her mother-in-law who was no longer with us.
The Wooden Spools
There were three different sizes of wooden spools. A few spools had the brand and price engraved on the bottom. In contrast, others had labels with this information glued on to the bottom. Believe it or not, some of the prices were as inexpensive as 10 cents! Therefore, you could tell that these wooden spools were quite old.
I wanted to preserve the labels of the spools. So, I soaked the spools in water to remove the labels. Once the labels were dry, I glued them onto an acid-free thick paper. Then, I coated them with decoupage glue. And affixed them back to the spools. This way, I could preserve the history of the wooden spools.
The Assembly
For the kitten’s head, I used wooden knobs I had bought at a garage sale from a retired carpenter. Then, I hand painted his face giving him green eyes and a few stripes. Next, I used wool felt for the ears and pipe cleaners for the tail. Afterward, I wanted to give the little kitten a unique personality. So, I dressed Boy Kitty in a vest and bowtie. Finally, to complete the Boy Kitty character, I gave him a ball of colorful yarn with which to play.
Dedication
I created the Kitty Boy ornament in honor of Tribilín, our first male pet kitten.
