Inspiration
My Childhood Fantasy World
rowing up, I attended a bilingual school where I learned about an array of American, English, and Irish traditions. I became very familiar with Saint Patrick’s Day and Leprechauns. My curious mind often wondered if Leprechauns indeed existed.
Drawing with colored pencils was one of my favorite pastimes. My dream was a brand-new case of Prismacolor pencils. I had, and still have, a very vivid imagination. So, I would hide in my drawings an assortment of fairies, gnomes, giants, trolls and leprechauns. You might find any fantasy creature you could imagine strewn throughout the drawings. I would sprinkle rainbows, stars, moons and suns on the sky. Magically, I enabled day and night to coexist. With my colored pencils I created my own fantasy world.
Leprechaun Ornament Design Process
A True Leprechaun Tale
When I became a mom, I made sure that my children were exposed to all my traditions. And my husband’s traditions too. Saint Patrick’s Day was one of them. Consequently, green eggs, green lemonade, green M&Ms, and green milk were part of this holiday’s fun.
One Saint Patrick’s Day morning, as I was getting lunch boxes ready, I heard my daughter scream with excitement. Next, I heard her running towards her younger brother’s bedroom to wake him up. So, I went upstairs to see what all the commotion was. To my surprise, I saw the hardwood floors all sprinkled with green glitter and shamrock confetti. So, down on their knees my children were picking up every single confetto they could fit in their tiny hands. Next, they followed the trail down the stairs as it turned and twisted at every corner of every room. They went through the family room, followed by the living room, and dining room. Finally, they end up in the playroom. Here, next to an assortment of shamrock shaped chocolates, they found a card. My daughter read it aloud, “Happy Saint Patrick’s Day.” It was signed “Leprechaun.”
The Leprechaun Ornament Dedication
That day, I answered my ponderings as a child. Indeed, Leprechauns did exist. And the fantasy characters from my childhood drawings came to life and my children experienced the magic of the fantasy realm. So I dedicate this Leprechaun ornament to my children. And I thank the Leprechaun for his visit once upon a time.
