Sugar Candy Ornament
created this Sugar Candy ornament to honor the endless hours of candy making with my paternal grandmother and sisters. Not to mention, our sore arms after a whole afternoon of pulling molasses taffy (melcocha). So, this Christmas ornament celebrates those wonderful memories of making, cutting, and wrapping taffy with grandma on Saturday afternoons.
Sugar Candy Ornament Design Process
Sweet Memories
I was a teenager when we moved to Bogotá, Colombia, for a couple of years. Away from my friends, I spent my free time making melcocha from papelón, and tending grandma’s flower garden. These childhood memories are very dear to my heart, and these unforgettable moments were in part responsible for my confectionery interest. So, I made Christmas candy making and treats baking part of my Christmas traditions.
Another Christmas tradition that I maintained with my family, is attending a performance of The Nutcracker ballet. These ornaments also celebrate my childhood memories of going to the theater to watch a performant of the Nutcracker, as well as those memories as a mother taking my children to the ballet. Thus, these keepsakes applaud the Sugar Plum Fairy ballerinas dancing around the Land of Sweets, somewhere around the world.
The Design of the Sugar Candy Ornament
Once, a coworker brought me a box full of wine corks. Like my other whatnots, I stored the box until the right idea came to mind. Eventually, I had the idea to create a Sweet Treats Ornaments Collection. I imagined it as an assortment of sweet treats. Thus, these wine corks were perfect to make hard candy ornaments to complement this collection. So, I used scrapbooking paper to cover the corks. Then I added colorful ribbons to accentuate the festive nature of these ornaments. Finally, I wrapped the candies with cellophane for an authentic look.
Collect this and all the ornaments in the Sweet Treats collection. And create a spectacular Christmas Tree inspired on The Nutcracker’s Sugar Plum Fairy and The Land of Sweets.
